Umbria (Con't.)

Perugia is the capital and well known for its university for foreign students. And, of course, Perugina Chocolates (Baci Kisses) - the local Scuola del Ciccolato is the leading Italian chocolate maker’s school. This school has classes but they’re very difficult to get into if you’re not a resident of Italy. In fact, as of this writing, all of the classes are given in Italian. Hey, I’m a real chocoholic so it’s on my bucket list. You’ll also find some of Italy’s most well-known chocolatiers, clustered round its central square.
You’ll find Etruscan (the area’s first major civilization) ruins here along with famous squares, cathedrals and monasteries, and monuments and castles. And, highly treasured artwork can be found all over Umbria. (NOTE: The Todi Arte Festival is held every September.)
The Apennines cross Umbria and offer unlimited hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and bird watching. There is great shopping, including Outlet Shopping nearby. For local craft items, look for leather, pottery, wrought iron, and gold pieces. The town of Deruta is especially known for its fine ceramics. In Solomeo and Magione, you can buy fine cashmere. Walking through a farmer’s market or two is always fun so try to find a couple during your trip.
Food is of utmost importance in Umbria and it’s where the “Slow Food” movement started. You’ll find culinary classes all over the region – Sono Marcella offers classes of no more than six persons and features day long classes or 2-5 day classes. Or, experience authentic home cooking with Alla Madonna del Piatto who teaches in her home.
Umbria features hotels of every style and budget from simple farmhouses to fully restored medieval castles. Some will be very simple; others very elaborate and luxurious with spas, several restaurants, swimming pools and similar amenities.
