Portofino (Con't)

On a recent visit, I wandered through town where I enjoyed a terrific lunch of pasta with pesto (sweet basil) and visited two marvelous hotels, the Hotel Splendido at the top of Portofino and the Hotel Splendido Mare down in the center of town. Either property will give you a wonderful hotel home to base your Italian Riviera vacation from. As I meandered through the winding streets, I stopped for a gelato at a sidewalk café, watching both the people and the boats come and go in the harbor. I did a bit of shopping – the local economy seemed to be doing quite well.
Pastel covered houses line the crescent shaped harbor and you’ll see a castle, the Castello Brown, which is situated atop one of the surrounding hills. The San Giorgio Church is on the way up to the castle. Walking, hiking, diving, and fishing are some of the activities in the area. (A few of the beaches are closed to the public.) The food is wonderful and much of it, local seafood dishes from the sea.
There are several ways to reach Portofino. By ferry from nearby Italian villages, by train from Santa Margherita and Camogli, and by bus also from Santa Margherita, just outside the train station. You can drive but will have to park in a parking lot in town as this community is not drivable by car. If possible, try to visit in the spring or fall as summer can be quite crowded.
